Lessons from a Birthday Party: The Sense of Duty
Dear friends, today I’d like to share a tale from my past, a story that taught me the true meaning of Sense of Duty. It’s a story that unfolded on a day of celebration, a birthday party, to be precise. So, sit back, relax, and let me take you on a journey back in time.
The Birthday Party
It was my grandson’s 10th birthday. The house was filled with laughter, balloons, and the sweet aroma of freshly baked cake. The day was perfect, or so it seemed. As the party progressed, I noticed my grandson, the birthday boy, looking rather forlorn amidst the festivities.
Upon asking him what was wrong, he shared that his best friend, Sam, hadn’t shown up. Sam had promised to come, but as the hours ticked by, his absence became more noticeable. My grandson was disappointed, and rightly so. But this situation presented an opportunity for a valuable lesson.
The Lesson
I sat my grandson down and began to explain the concept of Sense of Duty. I told him that Sam had made a promise, a commitment, and it was his duty to honor it. But sometimes, life throws curveballs, and we fail to meet our commitments. It doesn’t necessarily make us bad people, but it does teach us the importance of our words and actions.
I explained that as he grows older, he will have many responsibilities – to his family, his friends, his work, and most importantly, to himself. And with these responsibilities comes a sense of duty. A duty to be reliable, to be trustworthy, and to honor our commitments. This sense of duty is what builds character and earns respect.
Conclusion
By the end of our conversation, my grandson had a new understanding of duty and responsibility. He realized that while his friend’s absence was disappointing, it was also a lesson in the importance of keeping one’s word.
And as for Sam, he showed up eventually, with a valid reason for his tardiness. He had been helping his mother with an emergency. My grandson understood and forgave him, but the lesson of that day stayed with him.
So, my dear friends, remember, our sense of duty is not just about fulfilling our responsibilities. It’s about understanding the impact of our actions on others and striving to be reliable and trustworthy individuals. And that, I believe, is a lesson worth learning.
Until next time,
Kev
